Transforming Technical Education at Machakos University

Machakos University has reaffirmed its strategic partnership with the M-PESA Foundation in advancing technical and vocational education through the development of a Smart TVET facility. This follows a consultative meeting held on 19th March 2026 at the University, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing collaboration between the two institutions.

Machakos University, chartered on 7th October 2016, continues to uphold its core mandate of teaching, research, and community service. As part of its commitment to equipping learners with practical and industry-relevant skills, the University offers a wide range of TVET diploma programmes in fields such as Engineering, Business Studies, Fashion Design, and Hospitality.

The partnership with M-PESA Foundation aligns strongly with the shared vision of both institutions, particularly in promoting education as a key driver of socio-economic transformation. The Foundation, renowned for its focus on education, health, environmental conservation, and integrated livelihood development, is currently in the process of constructing a Smart TVET facility at the University. The project is expected to be completed within a period of twelve (12) months.

Speaking during the meeting, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joyce J. Agalo, expressed her sincere appreciation to the M-PESA Foundation for their continued support and commitment to advancing education. She noted that the Smart TVET project will significantly address the challenge of inadequate infrastructure at the University, especially in light of the steadily growing student population.

“This partnership is a timely intervention that will not only enhance our capacity to deliver quality technical training but also empower our students with the skills needed to thrive in today’s competitive world,” she remarked.

The collaboration underscores the critical role of education as a cornerstone for development, a shared pillar for both Machakos University and M-PESA Foundation. Upon completion, the Smart TVET facility is expected to greatly enhance hands-on learning, innovation, and skills development, thereby contributing to the realization of empowered communities and sustainable growth.

Machakos University remains committed to fostering impactful partnerships that support its mission and expand opportunities for its students and the wider community.

The initiative aims to enhance the university’s infrastructure to accommodate more students and strengthen its capacity for technical and vocational education and training. The planned facility will feature three floors, comprising multiple lecture halls, administrative offices, and staff break rooms, designed to support both academic and operational needs.

Construction of the Smart TVET building is expected to take approximately 12 months upon commencement.
