The Vice Chancellor of Machakos University, Professor Joyce Agalo, set an inspiring tone during the career talk held on April 2, 2025, by calling on finalists to carry the university’s name with pride as they enter the professional world. She encouraged them to be bold, innovative thinkers’ collaborators and solution seekers. Professor Agalo emphasized that the world requires not only academic excellence but also a firm commitment to creating positive change.

The event, held at the University amphitheater, was organized to prepare graduating students for a seamless transition from academic life into the workplace. Seasoned professionals and alumni were invited to share practical advice and personal experiences, offering students valuable insights into the realities of the job market.

Final Year Students attend a Career Talk

CPA Moses Mwariri provided essential tips on writing an effective CV for entry-level roles. He underscored the importance of keeping it concise, ideally one page and including key information such as personal contacts, a clear career objective, academic achievements (with recent education first and details like results or thesis), relevant work experience, skills, extracurricular activities, and at least three referees.

The keynote speaker of the event, CPA Moses Mwariri: Provided expert advice on CV writing, interview techniques, grooming, flexibility, and networking strategies, reinforcing the idea that “It is never too late to change and become a new you.”

Michael Muiya from CORPS AFRICA highlighted the importance of volunteer work as a pathway to developing new skills, gaining practical experience, and achieving personal growth. He noted that volunteering not only benefits communities but also enhances employability.

Mary Magona from SHOFCO, emphasized the impact of one’s digital footprint. She noted that social media profiles often serve as a first impression for employers and can significantly influence hiring decisions. She further encouraged students to blend academic knowledge with practical wisdom combining the strengths of being “book smart” with the adaptability and insight of being “street smart.”

Alumni led by Stephen Kibe shared reflections on their own career journeys, stressing that while academic grades are valuable, the real measure of success lies in one’s ability to deliver results in the workplace. They discussed three key livelihood assets: social networks, financial resources, and human capital. The career talk left students with practical, experience-based knowledge to guide them as they prepare to enter the workforce. It was a strong affirmation of Machakos University’s commitment to nurturing graduates who are not only career-ready but also capable of making meaningful contributions to society
