OPENING REMARKS BY THE VICE-CHANCELLOR PROF LUCY IRUNGU AT THE THIRD ANNUAL POST GRADUATE STUDENTS’ SEMINAR AT KILIMAMBOGO HALL ON 31ST OCTOBER, 2019

Invited Guests

Ladies and gentlemen

On behalf of the Machakos University Council and on my own behalf, I have the honour to warmly welcome you all to today’s 3RD Annual Postgraduate Seminar for the 2019 graduands who will graduate during the 4th Machakos University Graduation ceremony that will be held on 8th November 2019.  Let me also congratulate the ten (10) post graduate graduands who tirelessly devoted their time and resources that culminated into this great success in your academic pursuit.  I am pleased to note that among the presenters we have the pioneer PhD granduand.

Today’s seminar provides the presenters with an opportunity to share their research findings to stakeholders, academic staff and students. It also gives the continuing students a chance to improve their knowledge and skills in the academic research process.  It’s my hope that the results of your study will provide solutions to the existing problems in the educational sector and the economy.

Ladies and gentlemen

We are all aware that there is a lot of concern in the public domain about the quality of university research. There is a lot of commercialization thesis writing and the country is seriously reflecting on how to improve and sustain quality post graduate education in our learning institutions.  To mitigate this, Machakos University on her part has put measures in place to curb plagiarism in academic research and other scholarly work by developing anti-plagiarism policy as well as procuring anti-plagiarism software.

Ladies and gentlemen

Globally, the image of any university is pegged on the output of graduate students in terms of their research, innovations and publications. This calls for concerted and deliberate focus on postgraduate research activities. I wish therefore to take this opportunity to challenge the academic schools to focus on strengthening postgraduate research, mounting more postgraduate programmes and increasing the number of graduate graduands in future.  As a university, the Management is willing and keen to support students in pursuit of their academic goals.

As I conclude, I would wish to thank the school of post graduate, for organizing of this seminar. I also thank the other Schools for presenting postgraduate graduands in the 2019 graduation ceremony. With these few remarks, let me declare this 3RD Annual Postgraduate Seminar to be officially opened and thank you for coming.

Thank you and welcome.
