Machakos University Hosts Inaugural Chancellor’s Lecture on Change Management

Machakos University recently held its 1st Chancellor’s Lecture, a landmark event that offered valuable insights, inspiration, and a renewed call to action in advancing the University’s mission. The lecture, delivered by the Chancellor, Dr. James Mworia, centered on the theme of Change Management and underscored the need for purpose-driven service, institutional ambition, and strategic resource utilization to enhance performance.
In his address, Dr. Mworia highlighted the importance of prioritizing customer satisfaction placing students at the core of all University operations. He urged the entire University community to remain responsive to emerging societal needs and to align academic programs with evolving industry demands. Emphasizing the role of universities as solution providers, he called for a proactive, innovative approach in teaching, research, and community outreach.

A key message from the Chancellor was the urgent need to produce competent, job-ready graduates capable of addressing the challenge of unemployment both locally and globally. He further emphasized the critical role of digital literacy in today’s job market and encouraged integration of technology and innovation across all aspects of University life.
The Chancellor was recognized for his continued support of student success through the Chancellor’s Scholarship Scheme, launched in 2016. This initiative has supported 101 students in STEM disciplines, some of whom have gone on to secure meaningful employment. He challenged the University to shift from a cost-centered mindset to one focused on innovation and income generation, noting that sustainability in higher education requires both efficient resource use and value creation across all departments.
The Chairman of the University Council reinforced the need for close collaboration between staff and stakeholders to achieve the institution’s strategic goals.

The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Joyce J. Agalo reaffirmed the University’s commitment to transformation through continuous staff development and a progressive outlook. She emphasized the importance of transitioning from a traditional public sector mindset to a performance-based culture that values innovation, accountability, and excellence. Held on 25th July 2025, this first Chancellor’s Lecture marked a defining moment in the University’s journey, laying the foundation for a future defined by adaptability, growth, and societal impact.
